My father liked to have a tv in our dining room growing up. He liked to watch the news while he ate dinner after work. My sister and I would try putting it on Roseanne, hoping he wouldn’t notice. Occasionally it would work, but most of the time he switched it to the news - which we hated around Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Every year that day the news would run stories about MLK, the speech, and what people around town were doing to celebrate. As a young child, I had no idea who MLK really was because it wasn’t made a national holiday until 1986. My sole idea of this person was that he was a “shit disturber” according to my father - whatever that meant.
